I had both 17's and 20's at the same time a couple of years ago.The 20's were really rough cosmetically but sounded decent on anything I tried them with (including a NAD 3020). On my Sugden A28B they sounded incrediby good.
My 17's were much better cosmetically but did not sound near as good.
I would not conclude that 17's are necessarily worse. It could have just been a problem (eg in the crossover) with the pair I had.
I would conclude that the 20's are not as hard to drive as the rating suggests and with the right match, they can sound terrific.
