Acquisition format

Interesting thread. The projection format of IMAX is 70mm but may not be the camera (or acquisition) format. 70mm IMAX becomes an exhibition issue with floor to ceiling screen and gigantic image. It would be of interest to see a picture shot in 65mm like Dune, Lawrence of Arabia, or A Space Odyssey 2001 projected in the IMAX format. I don't know if IMAX optics can handle an anamorphic format like Super Panavision. The IMAX movies that were shot on 35mm are not trumpeted as such. The sound in the IMAX theaters of which I am aware has always been annoying. Digital sound through commercial transistor amps is harsh. The exhibitors seem to be going for big boomy bass and loudness rather than quality. Also the frame rate of IMAX at times makes the picture flicker. I don't think the IMAX projector can increase the frame rate. The most realisitic projected motion picture image I have every seen was a test reel shown in Showscan format - an experimental very high frame rate format. It was found experimentally (wiring people up to polygraph) that there was a max frame rate at which the human eye/brain could process the information. Going at a higher rate gave no benefit. Going slower and you would not get the same physiological reactions to what was being projected. Douglas Trumbull pioneered it. The Showscan frame rate was something over 60 frames per second. Of course the camera would have to operate at that rate as well for 1:1 time. The perception of the projected image as reality was as close as I've ever seen in the Showscan format. There was even a dramatic portion of the test reel shown with live actors. The image on the screen was so clear and so real feeling it was almost disturbing. There was a simulated lightening strike at one point that caused people to literally jump up from their seats.
