Home Vintage Asylum

Classic gear from yesteryear; vintage audio standing the test of time.

Have I gone to the dark side? Can I still post on vintage asylum?

In the last couple of weeks, my main system has undergone major change.

A couple of weeks ago I saw a pair a pair of Snell E II's at Sound Hounds, the local hi fi shop, and as I really like the Audio Note E's that are modeled on them, I thought that I would try the Snells.

They were everything I hoped, and more, so they are now my main speakers with a pair of Monitor Audio 600's and a pair of B&W 600 series 1's going back in trade.

As the E II's are about 18 years old, I figure that they don't compromize my vintage status too much but the real trouble happened a week ago.

When I was taking in my old speakers I noticed a 2 year old Plinius 9100 in mint condition. Now I have long been wanting to compare a modern high end amp to my beloved vintage amps so this was my chance.

Big Mistake!

Through the Snells, the sound was breathtaking so I had a problem. I didn't want to spend the money but there was no way that Plinius was leaving my system.

The solution was a drastic clearout to trade for the Plinius so out went the B&W DM17's I had been using as mains, as did the Lovan stands, the Quad 33, Quad 303, Luxman L-3, Cyrus One, and Dual 701.

I've hung onto RCA's old Sugden A48B which replaces the Cyrus in the bedroom system, the Yamaha B-2 which replaces the Luxman as my rear channel amp and the Yamaha C-2 which is now my phono pre.

My equipment rack looks strangely empty with only a Dual 1019, a Kyocera DA 410 CX and an old Toshiba tuner in the unused "what do I do with these" category.

Ah well! I guess i'll just listen to some music and think about it all.

David
