Re: Technics SL-1301 TT/ Shure V15 Type III Cart. - What's The Scoop?

You could sell the V15 III and get an M97 if you want to trade down. I have both and in my opinion the M97 is not in the same league.

That said, the V15III matches best with a light tonearm. The M97 is less compliant and has the brush to damp movement so it is happy in a heavier tonearm.

I would let your ears be your guide. If it sounds good then it probably is good. I would check it for wear under a high power microscope if you have access to one but if I didn't, and it sounded better than my other cartridges, I would use it anyway. V15III stylus suspensions seem to last for years and if in fact it has dried and stiffened a fraction, that may make it a better match for your tonearm than a new stylus. I'm less sure about the V15IV suspensions. The one I got in a garage sale had dried out completely and was unusable.

It is not the shape of the tonearm that matters but its effective mass. I am not familiar with the technics table but based on the other post, I assume that the Technics tonearm is mid-high mass and happens to be S shaped.
