As Kyle points out, the leaking goo isn't that uncommon. Bad transformers however are very common on the W5 series - both power and outputs. I'm almost surprised when I get a W5 with both transformers and the choke original and working.

I'd strongly suggest you swap out the electrolytics and coupling caps on any W5 you plan to use. I'd also carefully ohm out the power and output transformers (including the UL taps) before you waste too much time on a rebuild.

Also resolder everything (these were kits remember, often poorly constructed) and check the fuse value - should be a 3A/3AG (can't tell you how many 8A fuses I've found substituted in after the correct value blew...).
