Mills on the plate circuit, Riken ohm everywhere else

Hello there
I had the same doubts in the past, spent some time and money to compare several resistor types and brands in two different tube preamps.
Mills + Riken is my favorite combination for tube preamps.
If your system needs a little more definition/transparency, non-magnetic tantalum resistors in the cathodes sound very good.

Unless your budget is tight, forget about ANY metal film resistor. You are a tube fan, this means that you have a good ear for musical components and you do not want an etched, artificial HI_FI sound.

To hear the sound of metal film resistors, audition any Krell or Theta component, to mention just a couple of brands that use those critters everywhere.
MF resistors are accurate, reliable, stable and inexpensive BUT IME they are miles behind Riken ohm or tantalum in terms of musical transparency and natural instrumental timbre.
If you want to sample them without spending a fortune, try the series-shunt volume control tweak with a couple of Riken in series with the volume pot.
I bet a bowl of soup that you will be amazed.
If in doubt about this tweak, send me an email thru the AA, I will send a diagram.
Good luck
Carlos
