Maple lends itself to cryogenic treatment quite effectively. At Herbie's Audio Lab, we use a two-step process: First, we dry-freeze the maple to evacuate water molecules; then, we bring the temperature down to minus 320° F. to age and de-stress the wood. The result is a maple that is more dense and simultaneously more porous. As an isolation material, this allows components to render a very natural, responsive, and dynamic sound. Untreated maple sounds somewhat dull by comparison.
