Re: Batteries do wonders

Hello
"Should I put a large cap between each rail and ground?
> YES, a cap at the point of entry of the battery.

What about bypass caps that every one else talks about - they seem to be to shunt high frequencies to ground athough I doubt batteries should be a significant source of such noise.
> In general, I do not like the sound of bypass caps, the treble is emphasized. I prefer a single cap, the best that I can afford.

The caps you mention are for energy storage I assume.
> Correct. Also for filtering any noise picked up by the hookup wires.

Would I really need those with 7Ah sealed lead calcium batteries?
> Trust me, I have been there (100% battery powered tube preamp). You do not need a lot of capacitance as with the dirty electricity from the local utility. Batteries sound very clean to start with but a little high-quality local capacitance helps a lot. I believe I used 6 uF in my tube preamp. It would probably need at least 100uF to be quiet on and AC-to-DC supply.

ACI would have assume they are already pretty much like large capacitors will a hell of a lot of charge stored and the ability to dissipate it extremely quickly. I will get fuses for the batteries - that seem essential - will the fuses affect the sound?
> IMO they do not substantially affect the sound, if they are installed before the caps and regulators. If you want to forget the fuses, get a silver plated cryo fuse socket from AcmeAudioLabs.com and look for silver fuses in the Net.
I believe a few german stores plus Octave electronics or DIYhifisupply.com carry them.
Good luck
Carlos
