PCX, Welborne and Michael Percy sell several kinds of potentiometers.
In ascending order of quality: Noble, Alps, TKD, stepped.
Stepped attenuators sound more transparent than pots.
Transformer Volume Controls, a new fad started by David Slagle, are IMO the no-compromise solution, they have all the qualities of an excellent stepped attenuator plus they show oustanding dynamics and bass punch.
I have about $600 worth of pots and attenuators in the closet to prove my 2c opinion.
I hope this helps
Carlos
