I have a simpler explanation

Cardas solder is eutectic, it flows easily and gives a shiny joint, if properly heated.
When you solder spades to speaker cables, the cable + spade act as huge heat sink and cool down your 40W soldering iron tip, therefore you get a cold solder joint.
You need a 100W soldering iron with a large chisel (screwdriver) tip to properly heat the joint.
Rule of thumb: the soldering iron tip should be slightly larger (have more mass) than the parts being soldered. Otherwise, the heat will be transferred to the higher mass and the iron will be too cool to be useful.

BTW Cardas recommends a 100W iron for soldering their RCA plugs!
Good luck
Carlos
