I have replaced a 7805 with an LT1085CT-05. It sounds much better than the original power supply, however, the IC pinouts are different. You will need some heat shrink tubing to insulate the LT 1085 pins and criss-cross the pins. By all means download the data sheet from the LT site and compare the pinouts.
I suggest a google search on "7805 data sheet" and "LT1085CT-5 data sheet"
The LT1086 is a low dropout positive adjustable regulator, similar to LM 317 but with tighter specs. Aas long as your circuit draws less than 1.5A, it's OK to use it.
I suggest that you compare the data sheets and see if your circuit will feed the 1086 an input voltage within its specified range. Also look out for pinout differences.
