I second Quest's opinions...

...with a caveat: an autoformer will sound even better than a regular primary || secondary transformer like S&B or Sowther.

I have made preamps for my friends with Dave Slagle's autoformers.

On top of all the positive atributes Quest mentioned, autoformers respond down to DC (or so it sounds to me) and have tight, deep, powerful, TUNEFUL bass. I bet you will start collecting Ron Carter records just to hear his famous bass glissandi trick.

Since autoformers do not have to convert the signal to magnetic then back to electric, I hear a more "direct" connection with the source via an autoformer.
Also, all TVCs sound evenly balanced at very low volume levels (great for late night listening). My stepped attenuators sound wimpy at low volume levels (I have tried three different brands).
I also have four tube preamps in the closet...go figure this crazy hobby.

If you do not need gain in the line stage, your source has less than 1000 ohms source impedance and your amp has more than 10 K input impedance, you'll be in sonic bliss with an autoformer TVC.
Because of the TVC, my system has become highly musical and revealing at the same time. This "microscope" allowed me to develop a few DIY analog and digital cables that sound mighty fine to me and my friends.
Also, I am buying more records than before, that's a good sign.
I hope this helps
Carlos
