Re: cables in the freezer?

while there is some debate about the freezing of cables (and other things like CDs, CD players, so forth, probably because the benefits are sometimes not observed or detected, so to speak, a lot of us have found one time freezing of the cables to produce sufficiently better sound to warrant going to all the trouble. The use of dry ice or going to the extra effort of sending cables to cryogenic processing plant may produce slightly better results for some people than simply freezing overnight in the freezer section of the fridge. Slow thaw is apparently better for the end result. There are reports that freezing a second time will further slightly improve the situation; the idea is that freezing/cryogenic processing "tempers" the materials - similar to heat tempering. As to why tempering produces these sonic benfits is up for grabs, but I think it is something along the lines of more homogeneous atomic structure, i.e. better physical properties of the materials. In the case of cables, it is hard to say whether the effect is produced in the insulation material, the dielectric or the metal conductor and connectors or all of these. I have been cryogenically treating various things, as well as freezing things, more or less experimentally, for many many years. It is probably one of those things that's not everyone's cup of tea.
