Many homes have original wiring that is marginal. Multiple outlets are daisy chained, with downstream outlets subject to resistance from the upstream outlets. This can be avoided by having a dedicated circuit for the audio equipment or, at least, plugging the audio equipment into an upstream outlet. You can measure the resistance of the in house wiring by plugging in a hair dryer in various outlets and measuring the voltage drop at that and other outlets and comparing against outlets on different circuits.
There is also a quality of installation issue. Most outlets have two ways to attach the circuit wires: by wrapping around a screw and tightening for a low resistance connection or by pushing in a hole for a quick and dirty connection. Most homes are wired the cheap way.
