RE: Fat Bass Syndrome

I don't think any of the tweaks suggested are going to address your problem. It is much bigger and more fundamental than that. Chances are your tubed amp has a damping factor less than 20 and is unable to control the woofer. See if you can borrow a decent SS amp (I am a life time tube guy and am addressing the same issue currently). and when comparing it to your Jolida, pay attention specifically to the bass. You will likely prefer the rest of the spectrums presentation from the Jolida but you will hear why you aren't going to rewrite the laws of physics with a tweak. If you check the specs on your speakers and the damping factor of your amp (most tubed products do not provide this spec for good reason). I use Avalon Osiris and am trying to drive them with a CAT JL2 (damping factor of 10). The spectrum is gorgeous with the exception of the bass which is sloppy, loose, tubby and really doesn't do the speakers justice. The same would be true of the VTL Wotan 1250 watt monoblocks that use 24 6550 per channel and weigh 250 pounds with massive power supplies and capacitance. I contacted VTL and asked what the damping factor was and they refused to provide an answer. Although many reviewers tout current muscle tubed amps as having tight deep bass comparable to the best SS it just aint so. Many try biamping with SS on the bass and tubes on the rest. There is no easy or inexpensive answer.
The only SS that I heard that I could live with long term are Spectral and Symphonic Line. You can pick up old Spectral gear on agon for reasonable cost but SL is rarely seen for sale used.
