One of the interesting things that freezing, like cryogenic treatment, does to the disc is "squeeze" mold release compound in the polycarbonate layer to the surface. You can see this chemical as a cloudy film on the surface of the treated CD using ye olde breath test. This chemical film must be removed from the CD surface using clean cloth or kleenex, otherwise it will (continue to) interfer with the optical reading. The disc can also be treated before or after freezing with a liquid that addresses this issue. This is not to say MRC is the only issue.
