What some of you have is "BX" cable a.k.a "type AC" cable a.k.a. "armored cable." The spiral outer steel or aluminum cover serves as the ground conductor. In places like New York City, BX cable is still commonly used, especially in remodelling work where wiring has to be pulled through old spaces that may have nails and other hazards.
