To see what gauge of wire is there now first shut off the breaker, remove the two mounting screws holding the 15A receptacle, pull it out of the box and check the wires. They should be at least 12 gauge. If you don't know how to identify the gauge of wire, get the help of a knowledgeable person or hire an electrician. I would also check inside the panel and verify that the wires coming from the breaker are also at least 12 gauge.
