The late Seymour Cray (Godfather of Supercomputers) used Freon to cool his computers because those things ran REALLY, REALLY hot. It had nothing to do with cryogenic treatment of the material itself, but rather to keep the computer from suffering a meltdown.I had the opportunity to meet Mr. Cray in the early 90's when he was at Cray Computer in Colorado Springs. A very brilliant man, although his eccentricty is legendary. Cheaper MPP (massively parallel processing) computers by Silicon Graphics and others were his undoing at Cray Computer, since he was embracing vector-based computing with Gallium Arsenide chips. Probably more than you wanted to know, but I thought it was an interesting anecdote...
