Re: PSB Stratus Gold i's Modification Question

Many years ago I had the same questions.

I had re-wired a similar speaker with 12ga Monster cable and it sounded better. It was time consuming. The real problem was other people with the same speakers wanted the same thing done. The 12ga wire is very hard to hook onto the small tweeter terminals. Just the weight of the wire hanging down threatens to break off the terminals.

On the third pair I used 16ga Monster, the kind that looked like big TV twin-lead. Even though the insulation was real thick (it made the copper look bigger than it really was), it was much lighter and easier to handle. It didn't sound any different.

One day found me with six of the same speakers (I should mention that I ran the service department in an audio salon). I did each speaker differently and compared the differences.

The single biggest difference came from just cutting off the push-on clips and soldering the cheap 20ga stock network wire straight to the drivers. So much for the 12ga.

A simple screw type terminal block sounded the best. Even the expensive posts with locking bananna plugs didn't sound as good.

Bi-wiring is worthwhile, especially with the lower crossover points.

Good capacitors are worthwhile.

Better woofer inductors are a crap-shoot that can require re-balancing the attenuation of the mid and high frequency drivers. This can also happen with replacing the big capacitors feeding the midrange drivers.

Go slow so you can evaluate each change.
