I own a Hovland Sapphire, and feel it's the best amp I've heard. It's a real powerhouse of a 40wpc amp...lotsa balls! It is, however, $7800.If I were to buy an amp, and wanted to keep the cost under $2000 I would, *without a doubt*, build up a Dynaco ST70 with a modernized driver board and top-shelf passive componets and fixtures. A ST70 with one of Ned's boards, Riken resistors, Hovland caps, some well built, low mass binding posts and input jacks...sounds good to me!
You can build one mean mother of a ST70 for $2000...you'd have a amp that would give you many many years of pleasure!
