Re: Hey Ron C...wanna jump in here????

Back by popular demand! Boards can work fine as long as they are properly designed. Audio Research has used them for decades in their tube products and I have no experience with any problems. If a part needs to be replaced it helps a lot if the board is removable or easy to get to, of course. If a tube product was designed so the board traces become a fusable link when somthing goes wrong, this could be ugly. (If any of you have worked on projection TV power supplies you know what I mean.)
Completed boards can be tested as sub assemblies before they go in a chassis. The way parts are layed out on a board does have a lot to do with distortion, noise, crosstalk, etc. Some experimentation and experience is needed for the best results. If the boards are below the tube sockets and ventilated, heat should not be an issue. In multiple board units how they are connected together is important. Usually one large board is prefered in pre amps and the best connector is no connector.
No sales pitch this time!
