EL34s are used in the ST70 because they are easier to drive (pentodes) than beam power tetrodes. Any modification to change the output tube must take into account whether or not the driver circuit is sufficient. EL34s are a good tube and widely available; in addition, they tolerate higher plate and screen voltages than 6L6GCs - you would have to be sure they could handle this. Certainly any 6L6 other than the GC would NOT work. 807s will work and they are a very good tube but I would be nervous about availability since they were never widely used. Again, there is a collectability factor involved and any modification like this WILL lower the value of your ST70. My vote is to leave your ST70 the way Mr. Halfler intended, but that's just my opinion.
