Shunt volume pot mod on the ST70

Okay, I got curious - having read the easy-to-do and popular volume pot shunt mod on the Foreplay, I decided to install one on my ST70. (The ST70 amp runs direct to a CD player which has an output gain control).

The Mod: connected a 47k from the RCA input to the center tab of a 100k potentiometer and a hook-up wire into the tube grid. One side of the 100k was grounded while the other is left open.

I installed the potentiometer by gluing it at the back of the octal socket. Of course I have to cleanup all the connections to the octal socket and cut all connectors/pins. The lever goes stright through the center hole of the octal tube, cut it and put a dial. Neat. Total cost: less than $10.

Good thing is it works! I now have a volume control on my ST70. I did not observe any degradation in sound. Next on my todo list is use a Vishay or Tantalum resistors for the 47k....
