Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

RE: Are the good GE 6550A's gone?

Lets set the record straight here.
The NOS GE 6550A you purchased from Tube World starting in the early 2000's to 2011 AND the ones you purchased from me were all from the same LOT and same MIL Contract. I supplied TW with those tubes by the hundreds. They were not the 90's MPD manu'd commercial batches.
The ones I sell currently are from the same mid-80's MIL contract as you had been buying. In nice brand new unopened boxes of 100. NOT seconds, not defective, not used. Tested and screened properly.
Looking at all the replies below and talking with ARC customers that purchased these GE 6550A's from me, it appears that these ARC amps are indeed hard on tubes and it's imperative that they be set up correctly to get max performance and life (though may be short) from the tubes used.
High performance = high maintenance. Ask any mech that builds/races cars or bikes.
If you don't "trust" the quality of the tubes now available...that's your prerogative...but it makes no sense whatsoever.
You might want to "trust" your amp to a tech who's familiar with correct set-up. That might give you some more life out of your power tubes.
