j barry. You are testing continuity, whether or not the filament/cathode
is in one piece or not. Set your meter to low ohms R and apply the test
prods one to each big tube prong. If you get No deflection of the meter
the filament is not in tact - broken, probably from mechanical shock
rather than use. What you hope to see is meter deflection, same as if you
put the test probes together. If you plan to use the tubes in an amp it
is time to begin learning how a tube works. Lots of resources on the WWW.
