RE: return to tubes.

Nice post. used a Ming Da 2A3 (not X version) for about two years. I collaborated with a guy that did extensive mods to his after I provided him the schematic. I did more modest mods (cap, tube socket and resistor upgrades, no circuit redesigns). I LOVE this preamp and will never sell it although I am not currently using it (I have four pres). When tubed with the good NOS it is spectacular from the mid bass up. Nothing I have heard regardless of cost has greater presence/transparency. This is the best component I have ever owned for tube rolling and taking advantage of a large collection of NOS. Here is the problem: the bass is loose. My friend tried every conceivable circuit mod he could think of to address this with limited success. When the bass was marginally improved, something else was sacrificed elsewhere in the spectrum. You can find full descriptions of everything he tried on this site and Audiogon. For a non full range system, this pre is truly a giant killer.
