Muzikmike, hi. You can go backwards but not forwards: 6L6G (the glass version - strictly speaking 6L6 is a metal tube) cannot substitute for a 6L6GC. You can sub a 6L6GC for a 6L6G. As time went on designers wanted more power and hoped for same sonic characteristics hence the progression to the GC version. Of course this kind of scale up does not always yield what is wanted. Something to ponder - there are many who think the sound of the 6L6G is way better than any other 6L6 version. Certainly the 6L6G is the grand old beam power tube of all time. So, what do you want? Best sound or more watts?
