Wow. There is no good reason a line level pre should have so much gain. Matisse clone? Hmmm. I'll have to research it cuz am not familiar with it. It is probably pretty straight forward. You could mod it to take a tube other than 12AX7. Do you have some experience in working on things electronic? That would be a must. I would not encourage you to start digging into the thing without some technical smarts, but everyone has to start somewhere. You probably could sub a 5751 for the 12AX7 to knock the gain down a tad. It does pull a little more heater current than a 12AX7 but not by much. Oh, the EA-230 I mentioned goes back to 1983 or so. I use it to drive subs. You can go on David Berning's web site and look at the schematic if you want. Ditto the precursor to the Audionics BA-150 in all its complex glory. I wouldn't lose any sleep over the fact you never heard it.
