RE: the mystique of the 6679

Yes, I've heard them. Can't say they were any better (or worse) than any other 12AT7 or 6201. I think the only piece of gear here that takes them is a Berning EA-230. It just keeps happily running and running. The only 12AT7 I came to shun were late examples where the plate structure was tiny compared to what you'd expect in typical US or Western European manufacture - small, grey, and kind of rounded. Another amp that used 12AT7 was the Audionics of Oregon BA-150 - tube front end and second stage, transistor driver (!), and push-pull 6LF6 horizontal output tubes run with g1 tied to the cathode and g2 made the control grid. It also had lots of CMOS logic to 'auto-bias' the output tubes. Just thinking about it gives me a headache. David B. designed a big chunk of it. This amp fairly oozed Rube Goldberg charm. It certainly hooked me. What is your pre?
