RE: Buying Tubes & Being Ripped Off

After reading most all of the replies below..there are some good points and some misconceptions. Gross generalizations piss me off abit when they are directed at me. I sell tubes. NOS/NIB and good used ones.
I use calibrated Hickok 539C and B&K 707 testers as 1st teir checking to see if the tubes are any good. We've all seen NOS come out of the box broken or unusable, not often, but it does happen.
I built a burn-in rack, using bluprinted values (as in actual factory schem - (not 20 or 10 or 5% slop factor) that allows me to measure each individual tube (power type) for current draw under a high voltage load just like the tubes would see in a customers amp. I use various power transformers to alter the plate voltage.
So when I sell a matched pair or quad, they are reading the same with 5% or less. Those figures are written on the boxes.
That is about as well as I can get it to ensure the customer is getting what he pays for.
Does everyone do this regimen? Some do but most don't.
If there is a problem (very rarely), I replace the tube immediately. That's only fair.
If you want to accuse all sellers of being a bunch of Bozo's that don't know what they are doing - have at it - but in reality it's not completely true.
You have to do your homework and ask questions, lots of questions, and use the answers or lack of answer to help you make your decisions.
BTW: What a tube reads in one tester will not read the same in another - even if they were consecutive serial numbered lab grade testers.
Have a tubeular weekend!
