Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

RE: I don't mean windmill getter

It isn't really a question of better or worse as far as tonality goes (bright vs. lush vs. neutral), The better tube is the one that is the proper balance for your system, ditto for cables. The excception is when a tube or cable smears detail or sounds veiled. OK, now for 12AX7/5751
comparisons. I am currently using thr Raytheon 5751 WMG in a Accustic Arts tubed DAC. It is a very good tube that is very neutral with great presence/detail/top to bottom balance. I was using the Raytheon 5751 TMSG
before the WMG. This is another excellent tube that is a bit warmer than the WMG. The Raytheon 12AX7 BPSG I described previously. The only other 12AX7 that I would use as an alternative to the 5751 (Raytheon or Sylvania) is the RCA BPSG. This tube is a bit warmer with more body than the Raytheon. The Sylvania BPTMSG 5751 is another great tube that is very full bodied and lush in comparison to the Raytheon's. In many systems this tube would be preferred to any of the above. It can correct for thin sounding cables or a SS amp that lacks body. The GE 5751 BPTMSG is alot like the Sylvania except it is unusable for me as the midrange is extremely recessed. So you see, depending on the system any of these tubes could be the perfect fit. I have some of the expensive and highly regarded Amperex 12AX7 long grey plate SG. They sound extremely smeared next to any of the others mentioned. There are too many I have to describe here but the Siemens 12AX7 (especially the triple mica E82CC) is also a possible contender. Generally speaking the 5751 family is superior to the 12AX7's with a couple of exceptions,

Bart
