Actually you'd be far from crazy to build a regulator with tubes.Kepco, Lambda and others made some very rugged regulated tube supplies that were far more reliable than the generations of solid state regulators that followed. I'd bet we'd still be using pass tubes in high voltage power supplies if 8068's were readily available.
I'd question any tube amp design that requires 1A @ 485v. Planning an amp with banks of KT88's in push-pull?
If you really do require 1A consider a well designed unregulated supply. With a good design an unregulated supply will probably be more than stable enough. Time to break out some of the ARRL handbooks and look at the transmitter power supply designs.
