RE: Comparison of Raytheon 5751 BP 2M WG and Raytheon 5751 BP 3M SG

Anacrusis,

Thanks for that. I knew someone had tried both in the same system. I have three pair of the windmill getters on the way. From your description, I suspect I will prefer the 3M version I am currently using.
It is still nice to have a slight adjustment on hand if a PC or something changes and the system needs a tonal readjustment. I also picked up a pair of Raytheon 5751 2M gray plate SG today. I have never seen that one before and being the tubaholic I am, had to hear it. A commnent about your thoughts about tubes sounding different in different systems. A friend and I both had the CAT JL2 (I sold mine) and I was sending him tubes to try that I liked from time to time. After lots of rolling in all three signal tube positions (12AX7, 12AU7, 6922), we had agreed on the sonic characterization of the tubes we had tried (over 50 varieties). I then started rolling 5963's in the 12AU7 position. The one I liked best was the Sylvania SG. When he tried it, the midrange was badly recessed ("wheres the beef" was his comment). That is one anecdotal instance but I have experienced many. I stand by my prior post
that tubes can have different sonic signatures in different systems (although it is not common). Joe from Joe's tube lore thought the GE 5751 3M BP SG was a great tube. He compared it to the Sylvania 5751 3M BP SG and said that the only audible difference was that the Sylvania's midrange was very forward in comparison to the GE. In every application (several)I have tried both tubes the GE's mids were severely recessed.
Different system, different conclusion.

Bart
