Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

RE: To each his own

Jack,

I'm with you on the Raytheon 12AX7 LBP SG. It is the best I have heard.
It it ultra detailed with great extemsion on both ends and unrivaled speed, presence and drive. It suffers the least of any 12AX7 from the unfocused/smearing issues. It does require a circuit that needs a kick in the ass to work best. Place it in a tonally well balanced system and it will be a bit too bright/aggressive. What many here don't get is that
because one tube is a great tonal fit in your current system, another tube that is too lush or bright in the same circuit is not an inferior
tube. This tube that doesn't fit tonally in your rig will be a perfect fit in another. Neither tube is better or worse unless they smear detail
(almost all 12AX7's). I just bought a couple pair of the Raytheon WMG so I'll have my comparison in a week or two. The Sylvania 3M BP SG 5751 is a great tube as are the Raytheon 3M BP SG 5751. They are different tonally only and depnding on your system one will be a better fit.
Jumping on a thread and saying here are the best tubes in any given family is a waste of time. You can describe them tonally and whether they are focused or not. You may be able to also describe sloppy bass, rolled highs etc. but this is very tricky and relative to EVERYTHING in the signal path from the circuit breaker box forward. Jon, I think Frihed
preferred the Ray WMG in his system. I did some reading looking for relevant posts before I posted and found a recent one where everyone was in love with the Ray WMG. It does seem to be rarer than the 3M version.
Thanks for the posts and maybe I'll post again after I hear it.

Bart
