RE: Raytheon 5814a Windmill Getter

Anacrusis,

If you want to take it up several notches, swap the CBS 5814A with the Tungsram E80CC/6085. This tube will slaughter any 12AU7 variant. You were using one of the best 12AU7 variants in the CBS/Raytheon (many think they are the same tube) but the Tunsram is in another league. You may also find that you like the Sylvania 3M BP SG better than the Raytheon WMG with the Tungsram in place. These are all great tubes by the way. You can't pronounce one the ultimate as they are system dependent and tube compliment dependent. That said, the Tungsram is better than all other 12AU7's. It is also more linear than the CBS 5814A
(less warmth). This is why the Syl will be a better match than the Ray with this tube. Now I have a question for you. I have a bunch of the Raytheon 5751's 3M BP SG. I love them and use them currently in my DAC.
I have never heard the Raytheon 5751 WMG. Can you give me a good description of how they differ? I suspect they are both detailed and linear (not warm). Let me know as best you can how they compare. Thanks.
Oh, BTW, before we are bombarded with posts about the E80CC/6085 not being a direct sub for the 12AU7, this is technically correct as the E80CC draws a bit more current. I have swapped them for 12AU7's in DACs, preamps and amps. I have never heard of an application that they didn't work or caused harm (we are talking tiny amounts of current difference).

Bart
