RE: Different types of United 845

Sea Monster, hi. I believe the extra support you see from the top of the envelope down to the top of the plate structure was a refinement in 845 construction to make same more rugged. From a militlary standpoint rugged is good. The pair on the right has all of the mass of internals supported entirely by a metal band going around a central glass support that also houses the exhaust tube. Considering the mass of the graphite plate and other internals (the 'stem' of the tube to get technical) you can see how considerable stress could occur at this juncture - a point of sole support for the stem. If the tube were in service where it would be subject to considerable vibration (shipboard radio, transmitter on a land vehicle, etc) how nice it would be to have mechanical support for the stem via a glass piece that fixes it to the envelope structure from the top as well as the bottom. This was what United did in the pair on the right. RCA to my knowledge never did this kind of upper stem support. Except for this mechanical refinement the electrical specs should be the same. The 'W' may be the code for United's ruggedized version. Sound? I came to love the United as much as the RCA and maybe even a little more. So much depends on how the tube is run and what the circuit is. What are your 845 amps?
