CB, hi. If only JJ had made the pin out of the ECC99 the same as 5687 it would be a lot easier for A-B comparisons. Obviously the JJ design goal was to create a 5687 type tube. As it is one can easily drop in ECC99 for (example) a 6CG7/6FQ7 etc. Perhaps the JJ ECC99 pin out was selected for marketing reaons as it makes it a heck of a lot easier to try it in existing circuits. Anyway, I agree with you - haven't heard one I didn't like. Tung Sol are hard to beat. I like the Amperex 7119 a lot too and ditto the 6900. Is the 6900 worth today's market price? That may be a tough call. On points I would say its a toss up. Even in the face of that kind of competition the Tung Sol holds its own. More anecdotal: I made Novar to Novar adaptors (5687 pin out on the bottom - ECC99 on the top) to easily switch between types in existing amps. Using these adaptors the ECC99 did not impress against OS 5687 types as mentioned above. This came as a surprise as the JJ ECC99 looks well made - perhaps I should say exceptionally well made. By the way making Novar to Novar adaptors was a royal b-otch. The listening continues. And so it goes.
