Pretzel, hi. If your old meter requires a battery check it. It might not be the meter's fault - just that it needs new batteries. Re the JJ 300B - I would not characterize their sound as "too bright" at all. The JJ 300B along with the JJ 2A3-40 are excellent tubes. Perhaps there are some other issues. What is your amp? If you are getting a hot spot on the plate it can be indicative of internals (grid) that may have shifted, sagged, or ... I have not had this happen with JJ 300B or 2A3-40.
