Pay close attention to the last couple of paragraphs of the Chimera Labs
6SN7 thread that danlaudionut posted. If you are only able to use one pair of 6SN7's, you are at a disadvantage and may need to spring for some of the big buck tubes (Tung Sol round plates, Sylvania bad boys, etc.). The synergy of different 6SN7's is better than running the very best and most expensive 6SN7's throughout. The most synergistic pairing I have found (I have almost all 6SN7 types including the very expensive ones) are the RCA gray glass and the Raytheon flat plates. The Raytheon is all about speed and detail the RCA is all about texture and rich harmonics. Put them together and you have magic. You can also find synergy at other points in the signal chain if your system is all tubed.
