RE: Problem with a tube?

graciouslee, hi. #1 suspect - the solder connections from tube socket to the board. #2 suspect - the socket itself. What you are describing fits an "intermittent contact" diagnosis. I would suspect the tube(s) if you were getting other associated types of noise - low random sputtering, odd white noise bursts, or varying amplitude rushing noise. Often the tube socket/circuit board interface can be trouble prone with passage of years. Re-flowing these can often work wonders. Have you checked the input and output jacks? I would. De-Oxit makes some great products for enhancing metal to metal contacts. I would carefully treat all the tube sockets in your SP9. Take heed to ventilation warnings. Hope the cure is an easy one. It sounds to me like it is. Happy Listening.
