Lowrider, hi. Sounds like you are losing bias intermittently in the KT-77 that that went cherry. Short of replacing the Octal sockets (may be a good idea anyway) make sure all tube pins make good contact with the socket pins. Tube sockets are critical for any power tube and a weak link in many tube amps. If a tube's control grid loses bias the tube will go into runaway and begin to self destruct possibly taking other things along with it - like an output transformer.
