RE: Mullard EL34

I was working my way thru this thread and decided to jump in at this point. I Have a Ming DA 2A3 preamp (truly a giant killer) that uses one
EL34 (I think for voltage regulation). I usually start at the top of the heap and work my way back to see if something cheaper beats the reference. I purchased a Mullard XF1 and to my disappointment realized the preamp would not accomodate it (the fat base would not fit inside the decorative rings on the tube socket. I then bought some XF2's (double halo getter) and was perfectly content with them. I then started reading some threads on AA. Most stated that there was not much difference between the XF1 and XF2. There was one poster that contended that the XF1 was better than the XF2 and it wa easily discerned. I am a machinist so I decided to turn the base down on the XF1 I had. All I can say is thank you to the poster that heard the difference. It was a very dramatic difference! The XF2 sounded threadbare compared to the XF1. Not a close call. The entire bandwith was improved with the most prominent improvement being in the bass. There was so much body and flesh added to the sound that I was able to use two pairs of Indras instead of one. I am still making some PC adjustments but the ability to use two Indras is a major plus as there is no IC I know of that sounds so natural. The system of course will be the arbiter of how much difference you will hear but if you have a resolving ($$$$) system, don't miss the opportunity to hear what the Mullard XF1 is all about. Just a supertube on a level with the PW 6922, Tungsram E80CC and many others.
