RE: 7199 preamp tube?

diamondsouled, hi. Consider. The 7199 is a triode-pentode in a miniature package. This gives the amp designer a convenient high mu voltage gain section and a medium mu section in the same 9 pin bottle. Read this as - expedient, down and dirty, cheap, or all three if one is cognizant of the better end of design possibilities. It works but at what price? Dyna used it a lot because it got the job done (sort of) and it could be done with one tube - a bean counter's wet dream. Are there better ways? Sure. How about trying something in an octal, or four pin, even DHT. How about using a voltage gain somewhat lower than a mu of 100. It is so much nicer not doing hyper gain in one jump. The 12AY7A/6072 comes to mind. How about a 7119 or even 6900. Now there's a tube. Even 6SN7 can do a nice job. Some might gravitate to 26 or 56 76 or other. A mu lower than 12 in a couple of stages, even RC coupled, can sound much better than one voltage gain via a 40 or higher mu tube. There are lots of variables at work but mostly this works out to be true in my experience. Now. Still want to dink around with 7199? Even in 1965 I wouldn't.
