Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

RE: 300B variants

hOOhbt, hi, or should I say /H. Yours is an omnibus question and one which can garner every kind of answer imaginable, many contradictory. I am not sure distillation of responses would yield truth or even a reasonable facsimile. The short answer to your question is in the semi-thriving world of esoteric vacuum tube manufacture all kinds of metals and other materials have been used to make the plate structure in 300B. The WE 300B has a solid metalic plate. This is the standard tube. All the other variants that fall its parameters are something else. Go look at the Western Electric specifications for 300B. I don't know where graphite entered into the fray - Sino i think - mostly to tantalize the marketplace with a new tube flavor. Mesh plate tubes have woven metal mesh forming the plate. New variants cut a square hole on each side of the plate and spot weld perf metal pieces or screen to fill it. Doing this doth not a true mesh plate make. There have been open metals of other kinds used in the past - EF86 etc which looks something like mesh plate but is not.
A mesh is woven wire. Since national defense does not need vacuum tubes to operate its systems (with some exceptions of course) standards of what a tube type is and what it is not have fallen by the wayside. This may be a natural process of events with a technology eclipsed by solid state and micro-everything but it certainly leads to no end of confusion. You mention "single" re 300B. Single plate? All 300B should have a single plate - one chimney. Are you confusing 2A3 with 300B? How do the varieties of 300B sound in relation to each other? I'll leave that to others. But first, if it doesn't measure like a 300B (transconductance, reflected load needed to produce power, operating plate voltage, current through the tube, filament voltage & current etc) it isn't a 300B. It is something else, no matter what the manufacturer claims. If you are looking for 300B check out the JJ Electronics version. Price won't kill your budget and performance is outstanding. Happy listening.
