RE: Wasn't NU

Stu, hi. Are you thinking of Kentucky-Radio (Ken-Rad)? They may have been absorbed by GE who operated the plant at Owensville KY into the 80's.
National Union was formed out of three companies expressly to manufacture electron tubes. This was circa 1928-29. The new company quickly bought up a third operation. The name "national" was pretty common at the time. Being it was a Yankee company National Union may have been a natural. I know the receiving tube business ran up to about 1960. NU continued to make special purpose tubes until '68 or so - special purpose in contrast to general receiving tubes found in radio receivers, hifi sets, etc. The brand National Union was found on receiving tubes during this latter period but these were not NU made, just branded.
