Hi Mechans,
The Chinese are making great strides in DHT's (2A3, 300B, 845 etc.).
According to many accounts including shootouts, the TJ Full music and to a lesser degree Shuguang factories are making tubes that surpass the best
NOS of these types at a fraction the cost. Not cheap, but much cheaper and substantially better than the most revered NOS (WE 300B for example).
I have been stockpiling NOS signal tubes. It is ridiculously costly but I know that I will not have to go backward in sound quality. If the Chinese can translate their success with DHT's to signal tubes, there will be a lot of hoarders (myself included) with a very expensive collection of NOS tubes that have been surpassed for a fraction of the cost. They also will be putting a serious hurt on insanely priced gear.
I recently purchased a Ming DA 2A3 preamp ($1200)that is far superior to the CAT SL1 Ultimate MK2 ($6000)I was using. Next I will pick up a pair of their 300B-845 monoblocks. I suspect they will retire my CAT JL2 for a fraction of the cost. The tube selection of their products and impeccable construction (point to point wiring throughout) will be impossible for the US/Euro manufacturers to compete with. Don't forget their labor cost are impossible to match. Mechans, off topic, are the RCA gray glass 6SN7's the same construction and sound as the staggered black plate RCA 6SN7GT's? I am asking because it is similar to the Ken Rad (black glass and clear glass are the same tube) situation. Thanks.
Bart
