Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

yes, not really, and probably not

lemonbishop, hi. Yes, of course you can sub any 5AR4 for another 5AR4/GZ34. If the 5AR4 was not made in the USA, UK, Western Europe, or Japan I might want corroborating evidence of its worthiness. Adjustments needed, nah. I have an original Dyna Stereo 70 factory built with the original 5AR4. Don't know how many running hours it has but figure plenty since it was new about a half century ago. Works fine. Tests fine.
Pre amp originally meant that device that increased gain for a phono stage and at the same time provided RIAA equalization to correct for the inverse EQ curve applied in cutting the record. This was necessary because run flat (no EQ) bass information could kick the stylus right out of the groove. Likewise higher frequencies would be lost in the noise without a boost. It might also have "tone" controls - bass, treble, loudness, etc - so the user could boost or cut to taste. Gradually over time the "pre amp" name would become attached to line level stages that mostly provided switching and volume duties skipping a phono stage altogether because generally the world has moved on from the LP.
