RE: EMP and vacuum tubes

Stu, hi. Actually it was the first in a series of high altitude bursts (the so-called Rainbow Bombs) that highlighted clearly the power and range of EMP. It made the Associated Press wires as all kinds of havoc happened on the Hawaiian Islands: circuits burned out, traffic lights burned out, high frequency radio communications disrupted, and so on. These effects were not anticipated. I believe air traffic between the islands and mainland was disrupted. Some effects were quite transient and some were longer lasting: effects to ionosphere regarding radio propagation, radar scattering anomolies, significant radiation increase in the Van Allen belts, and so on. Most people have never seen an actual detonation or even good photography of one. Lots of footage now declassified. I think the Mike shot may be my favorite. The Able & Baker tests are impressive at first, but then you see multi-megatonnage in action like at Mike or Castle-Bravo and, well, the thermonuclear devices are in a whole other catagory entirely. The first liquid deuterium fueled detonation had scientists who had witnessed the Alamagordo test and Able/Baker shots horrified and not a little worried the fireball would expand to include them. At least the thought was nagging at them as they watched.
