Cleantimestream, hi. Nice memories of your Johnston Island visit. Calling it an island may be a stretch, of course. Not much real estate. If the Pacific Ocean rises 24 inches I don't think Johnston can take it. I corresponded with someone on contract during the nerve gas distruction operation. He told me there is a fenced off part of the atoll called the "pluto yard" which can only be the debris gathered from the explosion of rocket and warhead going back to the high altitude bursts conducted in several series in the late 50's and early 60's. This was an unintended non-nuclear detonation - just the HE from a thermonuclear primary and rocket fuel & oxidizer. Liquid fueled US rockets tended to self destruct. He had no idea what the pluto yard was. Available history fills in lots of blanks. Anyway, the plutonium and uranium in the warhead was scattered all over the place. That's one clean up job I wouldn't want.
